Young ReadersThere's no business like monkey businessHarry Monkey and Joey Kangaroo were on vacation in Chicago, which is called the "Windy City." Harry Monkey couldn't believe the gusts of wind that funnelled like a tornado around the high skyscrapers. Other animals didn't seem to notice as their umbrellas turned inside out and their newspapers were ripped from their fingers. Just a normal occurrence, it seemed. Harry, who was a workaholic, decided to combine work with his vacation and set up a banana tasting stand in a big grocery store. He had bananas from South America and other varieties from Southern Europe. Some of the bananas were long and yellow while others were small like fingers, in a dark green colour. Animals tasted and gave their preference to which variety they enjoyed the most. As Joey Kangaroo had nothing to do that day, he decided to accompany Harry to the store and kept filling the stall table with bananas from boxes located at the back of the booth. "I believe I prefer the Southern Europe variety," said Mrs. Alligator. "Oh, the South American is much sweeter," cooed Mrs. Dove. Suddenly the lights flickered and a giant roar sounded as the wind sucked at the roof. A pane of glass in the skylight broke and then another. The boards moaned and groaned. "They don't exaggerate when they say 'Windy City,' do they?" said Harry, shrugging his shoulders. "I think it is more than wind. I believe we have a hurricane," said Joey. No sooner where the words out of his mouth, but the roof gave way, and the force of the wind sucked the clothes off Harry's back. Embarrassed at being caught nude, the monkey jumped into the kangaroo's pouch and peeked over the top. Papers were being sucked up through the open gap where the roof had been. Bananas were strewn down the mall and animals hung on to doors and pillars as the sucking hurricane grabbed Joey with Harry still in his pouch. Up through the opening they flew and were flung into a pool in front of the library. "I think we should see if the trains are still running and get out of this windy city before we really get hurt," moaned Joey. advertisement "Tis a shame this happened when I was doing so well. I think the Southern Europe variety was the most liked, don't you?" asked Harry. "You are thinking of work when you have just had your clothes sucked off and flung through a roof into this pool?" asked Joey, shaking his head. "Maybe you are right! We will see if the trains are running and head to another location to finish our vacation. Let's try Nome, Alaska!" said Harry, heading for the station. "I wonder when he will notice he hasn't any clothes on?" sighed Joey Kangaroo. posted on 01/04/12 |
